Fridays – Space, The Final Frontier: Of Archaeology?
6/11 & 6/18
Instructor: Stephen “Dr. Steve” Phillips, Ph.D.
In early June 2016 the announcement of the discovery of a “massive” new ancient monument, “hiding in plain sight” at the 2,000 year-old city of Petra, Jordan, made international headlines. Petra is one of the new Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; a site where Dr. Phillips spent the summer of 1992 excavating the Temple of the Winged Lions. The existence of what appears to be an enormous platform, roughly the size of one-half a football field and nearly hidden beneath the sands of time, was announced by Dr. Sara Parcak, an Egyptologist at the University of Alabama, who has pioneered the use of satellite imagery to locate buried archaeological sites. Dr. Parcak recently won a major award for this research.
