Winter on the Nile: Vintage Egypt, Part I — Egypt is one of the world’s top travel destinations; her ancient temples, tombs, pyramids, and mysterious hieroglyphic writing system have enthralled visitors for generations. Organized travel to Egypt, however, is a relatively modern phenomenon. Richly illustrated with archival photographs, this three-part seminar takes the audience on a captivating journey through the history of travel to Egypt; from her “Golden Age” of tourism, between the years 1850-1950, right up to the modern era.
Part One focuses on the development of Egypt¹s legendary hotels, such as the Majestic Hotel in Alexandria, Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo, and the Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor. Gorgeous 19th century photographs accompany this virtual trip through time and space a wonderful way to escape the winter doldrums, without leaving the comfort of home!

Winter on the Nile: Vintage Egypt, Part II — Part Two focuses on the development of the Nile River Cruise industry. How did Nile River cruising get its start? What were the accommodations for tourists? What was it like to sail down the Nile River in the Victorian Age? We will even discover what a typicaldinner menu was at that time, based on an actual copy of a menu. More gorgeous archival photographs accompany this virtual trip through time and space a wonderful way to escape the winter doldrums, without leaving the comfort of home!
