Pets in Ancient Egypt

Humans began domesticating wild animals at least 12,000 to 14,000 years ago. Domesticated animals, such as cattle, fowl, sheep, and goats, not only served as a being a source of food and raw materials, they could also serve as pets, as they do to this very day. Evidence for common pets, such as cats and dogs, dates back to ancient Egypt’s distant past, at least by 5,000 years ago. Some of these same animals also became symbolic representations of certain gods and goddesses in ancient Egyptian religion.
