Space… The Final Frontier, of Archaeology?—In early June 2016 the announcement of the discovery of a “massive” new ancient monument, “hiding in plain sight” at the 2,000 year-old city of Petra, Jordan, made international headlines (see Petra lectures, above). Dr. Sara Parcak, an Egyptologist at the University of Alabama, has pioneered the use of satellite imagery to locate buried archaeological sites, many almost invisible from the ground.

This intriguing lecture illuminates the new science of “satellite archaeology” and the work of Dr. Parcak. We first return to Petra to see that spectacular site and examine the new discovery in detail, and then, using freely available software, we will try our hand at finding old and new archaeological sites from space, the final frontier… all by ourselves!
