Thursdays – “Exotic Music”
9/8 & 9/22 @ 2:00 PM/CH
Instructor: Ira Miller
In the first September lecture, we will travel to Australia to experience the music of the Didgeridoo, a long wooden instrument played by the indigenous peoples of that continent. We will also look at some of the music brought to Australia from the British Isles.
As we leave Australia during the second September lecture, we will travel to Mongolia, the Arctic, Africa, and the Middle East to experience an interesting tradition called throat singing. During each lecture, we will hear what happens when these unique musical styles come in contact with our own music traditions.
