Mondays – The English Language: A Journey
5/11 & 5/18 @ 11:00 PM/CH
Instructor: Professor Judy Okun
With a combined geographic and historical approach, we trace the evolution of the English language from post-Roman Germanic invasions in Britain, through Norse and Norman influence, to the Shakespearean period, to its current position as a global language. We will also examine the development of alphabets and the concept of language families, endangered languages, language as a marker of migration and cultural status, and discuss English in the context of the Indo-European Language Family.
