Fridays – Pharaoh’s Workers: Uncovering the Lost City of the Pyramid Builders at Giza

4/10 & 4/17 @ 11:00 AM/CH

Instructor: Stephen “Dr. Steve” Phillips, Ph.D.

Since the 1990’s, excavations led by Dr. Mark Lehner of Harvard University, in partnership with Cairo University, revealed the remains, hidden beneath the sands at a site just southeast of the pyramids of Giza, of a settlement that was created to house the workers who built the third pyramid, This lecture explores this amazing site – its context, its layout, its infrastructure and how intensive excavations of the city have drastically revised many popular ideas regarding the lives of the ancient Egyptians who actually built their ruler’s pyramids. How did they feed and provide water for thousands of workers? Were they enslaved? These recent excavations and discoveries have radically changed our knowledge of the people who literally built the pyramids at Giza.
