“I’m really satisfied with everything that’s available here. I feel blessed that there’s a place like this.”
When Janet Kaufman began exploring continuing care retirement communities in the summer of 2024, Lions Gate’s Jewish nature and kosher dining made it an easy decision. Shabbat services and holiday celebrations have always been of paramount importance to Janet, and it certainly didn’t hurt that her daughter, Bryna Bass, lives nearby and can visit often.
Janet enjoys the many activities available to residents. “There’s such a great selection – sometimes almost too much,” she said. “I really enjoy participating.” Her favorite activities include arts and crafts, manicures in the salon, and the Monday presentations by Stuart Liss. Bryna added, “Mom really enjoys the live entertainment.” That, of course, comes as no surprise – it’s one of Lions Gate’s most popular offerings.
While the variety of activities and programs was important to Janet, the community’s strong sense of Jewish life was the main reason she chose Lions Gate. Shabbat and High Holiday services make her feel comfortable and connected, truly part of the community. Speaking of weekend and holiday services, she shared, “They call me to come up and open the ark. It makes me feel wonderful. As long as I can participate, I’m happy.”
Lions Gate’s observance of the rules of Kashrut also really mattered to Janet. Her daughter agreed: “They keep kosher – strictly kosher. Mom always kept a kosher home. That’s one of the reasons she chose Lions Gate – they keep kosher too.”
Regarding the Lions Gate’s food, Janet is thrilled with it. “The food is wonderful and there’s so many choices,” she said with a laugh. “My favorite place is really the dining room,” she added. “That’s where you see everyone, talk, and laugh. You can always find someone to sit with.”
Ever the people-person, Janet reflected on community life with humor. “I really do like the people,” she said, chuckling. “Have you ever heard of a kesselgarden? That’s Yiddish for a lively, noisy gathering. Sometimes I think this place is a kesselgarden — and I love it.”
Although Janet considers herself “pretty self-reliant” and plans to stay that way, she appreciates the dedicated staff who make Lions Gate run smoothly. “Everything is right here in front of me, and if I need anything, I pick up the phone and get help right away,” she said. “So, I would say the service is exemplary.”
She smiled. “I’m really satisfied with everything that’s available here. I feel blessed that there’s a place like this.”
