“Where They Were Meant to Be: Lois and Darryl’s Lions Gate Journey”
Lions Gate is more than just a community – it’s a family. And no one exemplifies that better than Lois Jacobs and Darryl Bressler, a mother and daughter residing in separate Independent Living apartments. Lois and Darryl (pronounced “Darl”), 93 and 66 respectively, moved to Lions Gate this past April. They seem more like best friends than mother and daughter, laughing at inside jokes and finishing each other’s sentences.
Their decision to move together, though unconventional, reflects exactly what makes Lions Gate so special. It’s a place where residents of all backgrounds, stories, and generations find connection, comfort, and a shared sense of purpose.
“Most people don’t make a move like this later in life,” Lois admits. “But I knew what I wanted: a vibrant Jewish community, the comfort of family nearby, and a place where I could truly feel at home.” She’s found all of that here.
“I wanted to get back to my Jewish roots,” Lois adds. “Here, Jewish traditions are celebrated in ways that feel familiar and authentic. That was a major draw. The holidays matter. The culture matters. That means something.”
Darryl, on the other hand, was looking for something more. “I wasn’t ready for retirement in the traditional sense,” she explains. “I wanted to live somewhere that felt enriching, that offered both independence and support – and Lions Gate fit the bill perfectly.”
For her, the decision was an easy one. She sees living at Lions Gate as an opportunity to enjoy a vibrant lifestyle, surrounded by community, comfort, and connection. Both she and Lois believe the community offers a lifestyle that is both active and accommodating. From daily programs, lectures, and live entertainment to beautiful walking grounds, delicious dining options, and a warm, engaged staff, every detail is designed with residents’ well-being in mind.
“The activities here are incredible,” Darryl says. “There’s always something to do but no pressure if you’d rather just relax or socialize informally.”
Though they’ve only been here a few months, both are settling in and making new friends. Lois, a passionate bridge player, already enjoys regular games with neighbors. “The community here is so welcoming,” she says. “It didn’t take long to feel like I belonged.”
Lions Gate also offers a sense of security and peace of mind. “We know that as our needs evolve, Lions Gate is prepared to meet them,” Darryl says. “Whether that’s healthcare support, dining flexibility, or just someone to talk to, we’re not alone here. That’s priceless.”
For both Lois and Darryl, Lions Gate isn’t just a place to live, it’s a place to thrive.
