Thursdays – Pillars of Soul Part 3&4
3/12, & 3/26 @ 2:00 PM/CH
Instructor: Ira Miller
3/12 The Rise of Sophisticated Soul: Philadelphia and Muscle Shoals. We are now in the early 1970s, and soul music is becoming more elegant, more orchestrated, and more geographically diverse. In Philadelphia, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff build a producer-driven music empire that will rival Motown’s earlier dominance. And a small town in Alabama called Muscle Shoals will host two music studios that will provide the sound behind such soul artists as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Clarence Carter, and the Staple Singers.
3/26 As we end the series Pillars of Soul with Session Four: Where Soul Goes Next: Rhythm, Revolution, and Chicago’s New Voice, we will look at how the work of James Brown creates a blueprint for “funk” and then, starting with the work of Curtis Mayfield, examine Chicago’s influence on modern R&B.
