Thursdays – Ludwig van Beethoven: Wrapping Up the Music of His Late Period/5/28 Franz Schubert
5/14 & 5/28 @ 2:00 PM/CH
Instructor: Ira Miller
5/14 We will complete tracing Beethoven’s late period, beginning with the String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 (“Serioso”) as a turning point toward his inward, visionary style. While touching on the late piano sonatas, the Missa Solemnis, the Ninth Symphony, and the final quartets, we will consider how Beethoven’s deafness reshaped his expressive world. The session highlights the ideas that define his final decade and his lasting legacy.
5/28 We will explore Franz Schubert as yet another bridge between Classical structure and Romantic expression. While working within established forms such as the symphony, sonata, and chamber music, he expands their expressive range through extraordinary melodic invention and harmonic color. His Lieder are central, uniting poetry and music in a new way. We will focus on how Schubert preserves the formal balance inherited from the Classical period while deepening lyric and emotional expression.
