Thursdays – I’m Your (Jewish) Man – The (Sacred) Songs of Leonard Cohen

3/13, & 3/27 @ 2:00 PM/CH

Instructor: Ira Miller

3/14 When he reviewed Cohen’s 15 studio albums, Ira found 24 songs that had a basis in some aspect of Jewish thought, compared to five reflecting Buddhist thought, six mentioning some aspect of Jesus, and 11 clearly about his relationships with women. By the end of this second session on Leonard Cohen, Ira hopes to make this complex author, poet, artist, and musician’s work a little more accessible.

3/27 We will revisit the Music of the Lord of the Rings.  Several years back, Ira took us through the music of Howard Shore.  The Lord of the Rings posed a great challenge for Shore.  Stylistically, this music was a departure from anything he had done prior.  With over 13 hours of music, requiring a massive musical ensemble, it was among the longest musical scores ever created for film.  After earning Shore three academy awards, two Golden Globes, and three Grammys, it was voted the best soundtrack of all times for six consecutive years, by a Classic FM listener poll.   During this session, we will revisit the world of J.R.R. Tolkien through Howard Shore’s music.
