Thursdays – Famous Jewish Personalities in Politics, Science, Music and Art

5/1 @ 3:15   5/8, 5/15, 5/22 & 5/29 @ 3:00 PM/ CH

Instructor: Stuart Liss

5/1 Jerry Lewis: In some circles, they say that comedy as we know it wouldn’t exist without Jerry Lewis. He walked so that the comedians we know, and love could run. It is undeniable that his movies brought joy and laughter to the world. However, the comedian’s life was not as nearly straightforward nor squeaky clean as one might suspect. The “King of Comedy” had his skeletons to hide.

5/8 Hugh Hefner: Hugh Hefner fought hard for the rights of minorities and oppressed groups, but in recent years he’s come under fire as more and more about the dark side of his Playboy lifestyle has come to light. So, who was the real Hugh Hefner? The truth is complicated.

5/15 Bob Saget: It would be fun to claim that Bob Saget had a secret double life. And it’s partly true—he did have a double life, but he made no secret about it. Some days you’d get the nice dad character who was full of hugs and appeared on Full House and America’s Funniest Videos. On other days there’d be Saget, the stand-up comedian, with a shocking, curse-filled set that could make your toes curl.

5/22 Cornelius Vanderbilt Although far from the rugged chaos of the American Frontier happening throughout the 1800s, the East Coast’s business world was just as brutal as the Old West. One of the most prominent players in this game was Cornelius Vanderbilt, also known as “The Commodore”.

5/29 Gilbert Godfrey Most people might not recognize his name, but almost everyone can pick out Gilbert Gottfried’s unmistakable, grating, nasal voice. And while he kept his comedy sharp and his fans laughing until the very end, his life and career were even more bizarre than the wildest jokes he ever told.
