Fridays – “The Dead Really Do Tell Tales: Disease in Ancient Egypt”
12/12 @ 11:00 AM/CH
Instructor: Stephen “Dr. Steve” Phillips, Ph.D.
12/12 In previous lectures, we learned the ancient Egyptians had a deep understanding of human anatomy and did they practice medicine. We continue that line of investigation by examining the evidence for disease and trauma as presented in ancient Egyptian human mummies.
This presentation goes behind the scenes on an actual archaeology dig in Egypt, with the Cairo University-Brown University Giza Expedition. Dr. Steve was part of the management team for this excavation. We will examine a select group of the mummies exhumed from our excavations in the vast cemeteries adjacent to the Great Pyramids and Sphinx. Highlights include ancient Egyptian human skeletal remains that display the successful treatment of serious wounds, as well as direct evidence of diseases, for example tuberculosis, still extant in humankind today.
