Fridays – Gold of the Pharaohs: The Discovery of the Intact Tomb of King Psusennes

3/7 & 3/14 @ 11:00 AM/CH

Instructor: Stephen “Dr. Steve” Phillips, Ph.D.

In over 30 years of traveling to and working in Egypt, Dr. Steve has visited numerous ancient sites that are not typically on the tourist map. Whenever possible, we would use our days off from our archaeological excavation to explore little-visited ancient Egyptian sites.

This lecture first takes us on a journey deep into the Nile River’s delta region, on a field trip that culminates with a visit to Tanis. Tanis is the site of one the greatest discoveries in the history of ancient Egyptian archaeology: the nearly intact tomb of the Late Period pharaoh, Psusennes. Discovered in 1939 by a prominent French Egyptologist, Pierre Montet, the tomb of Psusennes contained treasures rivaling those of an earlier Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamun, whose own tomb discovery largely overshadowed this equally amazing find.Think. Gold. Lots of gold. Prepare to be dazzled.
