Thursdays – African American Music & Music of Latin America
2/13 & 2/27 @ 2:00 PM/CH
Instructor: Ira Miller
2/13 lecture will focus on Nino Rota and the music of the Godfather series. Unlike other film composers, Nino Rota is very specific in his use of thematic music for the three Godfather films. He uses only a small handful of themes and there are many places where there is no music at all, to emphasize the dramatic intent of the scene. Although Rota was not alive for the production of the third film in the series, Carmine Coppola does a wonderful job integrating the work of Rota with his own to ensure all three films are well integrated by the music.Of all songs in the popular “folk” genre, Leonard Cohen’s work may be the most influenced by Jewish thought.
2/27 We will discuss and play excerpts from the “Jewish” songs of this great modern poet.
