Thursdays – Famous Jewish Personalities in Politics, Science, Music and Art

3/6 @ 3:15 PM/ CH, 3/13, 3/20, & 3/27@ 3:00 PM/ CH

Instructor: Stuart Liss

3/6 Sally Ride: in 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to go up into outer space (just a couple decades after Star Trek had introduced that idea to pop culture). It would be easy to just say the sentence and call it a day, but Ride had a very extensive career with NASA.

3/13 Marie Curie: Requires little introduction: her name itself has become a shorthand for the archetypical super-smart and trailblazing female scientist. The Polish-born scientist formed one-half of the Curie power couple, who went on to win the Nobel Prize for their discovery of radium. And she didn’t stop there: in her widowhood, Curie went to win another Nobel prize, thereby cementing herself in history as a role model for women in STEM.

3/20 Karl Marx: One of the most significant thinkers in human history, Karl Marx’s works on history, economics and philosophy have certainly changed the world. But beyond that, he was also an interesting man who lived a full, fascinating, impressive, and sometimes ridiculous life.

3/27 Wright Brothers: Orville and Wilbur Wright earned their place in history as the first people to successfully build and fly an airplane. Safe to say that they spent the rest of their lives devoted to aviation, paving the way for every airplane flight that’s ever been made sense then. But after those first flights, what became of them in their own lifetime?
