7/2 Secrets, Spies and Deception of the Civil War
Secrets and Spies: A spy is a person who is sent into enemy territory to inspect their works, ascertain their strength, and secretly communicate intelligence. In accordance with the rules of war, a spy, if caught, is subject to capital punishment.
Espionage and spying are the least understood, yet one of the most interesting aspects of the Civil War. This presentation details the exploits and daring of many of the male and female spies. This is the first time that significant numbers of women became spies. They disguised themselves as men, feigned idiocy, and used their “feminine charms” to obtain secrets. Men started the first Bureau of Military Intelligence, developed codes, and assumed other identities. Some were caught and hung, some just disappeared into history, while others penned memoirs of their exploits and adventures. This program includes many of the spies and their passionate and secretive adventures.
