Art after the fall of Rome, sometimes considered to be “the dark ages” were not very dark at all. Classic Roman style gave way to the rise of Gothic style that permeated architecture and formal art. The attempts of the Byzantine Empire to restore the Roman Empire brought influence from the Orient that affected art, especially in Italy.

Influenced by the church, art of the Middle Ages reflects God, nobility, the feudal system and peasantry. Turmoil between Christian Europe and Moslem Middle East brough a mix of artistic ideas that are seen in the rise of the Vikings, Normans and Moors
